Qualification Recognition
Chinese qualifications are not automatically recognised in Australia. The process depends on your profession: Regulated professions (medicine, nursing, engineering, teaching, accounting) require assessment by a specific authority before you can work. Non-regulated professions may need skills assessment for visa purposes but not necessarily for employment.
Assessing Authorities
CPA Australia/CA ANZ/IPA for accountants, Engineers Australia for engineers, AHPRA for health professionals, AITSL for teachers, ACS for IT professionals, VETASSESS for general professional occupations, TRA for trades. Each has specific requirements: document verification, English language evidence, experience evidence, and sometimes additional exams or supervised practice.
Bridging Courses
If your qualifications aren't directly comparable, bridging courses fill the gap. Common for: doctors (need to pass AMC exams), nurses (OSCE practical exam), teachers (may need additional teaching placements), and engineers (competency assessment). Courses range from a few months to 2 years and can cost $5,000-30,000. University bridging programs are available at most major universities.
Tips for Chinese Graduates
Get your Chinese degree notarised before leaving China (much easier than doing it overseas). Obtain official transcripts with English translation. NAATI-certified translations are required for all non-English documents. Some assessors accept translations from your Chinese university's international office. Start the assessment process early — it can take 3-12 months depending on the profession.
