EOI and SkillSelect: How Invitations Work | AC878 Visa

How SkillSelect Works

For skilled visas (189, 190, 491), you submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. The system ranks all EOIs by points score. The Department issues invitations in regular rounds — highest points first. If you receive an invitation, you have 60 days to lodge a full visa application. EOIs are free to submit and can be updated anytime.

Current Invitation Trends

Invitation scores vary by occupation and round. Popular occupations (Accountant, IT) require higher points (often 90-95+). Less competitive occupations may receive invitations at 65-75 points. State nomination (190) adds 5 points and often has lower cut-offs than the 189. Regional nomination (491) adds 15 points and has the lowest requirements. Check recent invitation rounds on the Department website for current scores.

Strategies to Improve Points

  • Improve English score (Superior = 20 points vs Proficient = 10)
  • Get state nomination (190 = +5 points, 491 = +15 points)
  • Partner skills (partner with competent English + positive skills assessment = +10 points)
  • Study in regional Australia (+5 points)
  • Professional Year program (+5 points for accounting, IT, engineering)
  • NAATI certification in community language (+5 points)
  • STEM qualification (+10 points for Masters/PhD in STEM from Australian institution)
