Two Streams
Post-Study Work stream: For graduates with a bachelor degree or higher from an Australian institution. Duration depends on qualification: bachelor = 2 years, masters coursework = 2 years, masters research = 3 years, doctorate = 4 years. You do not need a skills assessment or nomination on any occupation list.
Graduate Work stream: For graduates with skills and qualifications related to an occupation on the skilled occupation list. Requires a skills assessment. Valid for 18 months. This stream is less popular since the Post-Study Work stream is usually a better option.
Eligibility
You must have held a student visa in the last 6 months, completed at least 2 years of study in Australia (Australian Study Requirement), have adequate English (IELTS 6.0 overall), and meet health and character requirements. You must apply within 6 months of completing your course or receiving your completion letter.
Regional Extension
If you live and work in regional Australia on your 485, you may be eligible for a second 485 visa giving you additional years. This is a significant incentive to consider regional study and work as part of your migration pathway. Regional areas include everywhere except Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane metropolitan areas.
Work Rights
The 485 visa grants full, unlimited work rights. You can work for any employer in any occupation. This is a critical period for Chinese graduates to gain Australian work experience, which adds points for future skilled migration applications and helps build professional networks.
Pathway to PR
The 485 is not a permanent visa but is a crucial stepping stone. During your 485, focus on improving your English score, gaining skilled work experience in your nominated occupation, and considering state nomination or employer sponsorship. Many Chinese graduates use the 485 period to accumulate the points and experience needed for a 189 or 190 visa application.
