Special Category Visa (444)
New Zealand citizens automatically receive a Special Category Visa (subclass 444) on arrival in Australia. This visa allows you to live and work in Australia indefinitely with no application required. However, it doesn't provide access to many government services, student loans, or a pathway to citizenship — creating a class of long-term residents with limited rights.
New Pathway to PR
Since July 2023, NZ citizens who have lived in Australia for 4+ years can apply for permanent residency through a new Direct Pathway (subclass 189 NZ stream). This was a major policy change affecting hundreds of thousands of NZ citizens. Requirements: 4 years continuous residence, income threshold of $53,900/year, character and health checks. No skills assessment or points test required. This pathway also opens the door to Australian citizenship after 1 additional year.
Access to Services
NZ citizens on the 444 visa can: work without restriction, access Medicare, receive some Centrelink payments (after 10+ years for some). Cannot access: HECS-HELP student loans (until PR), NDIS, full Centrelink benefits. Children born in Australia to NZ citizens may be eligible for Australian citizenship. The new PR pathway resolves many of these access issues for long-term residents.
