How the Points System Works

The points-based system is used for skilled migration visas including the Subclass 189 (independent), 190 (state nominated), and 491 (regional). You need a minimum of 65 points to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. However, in practice, most occupations require significantly higher points to receive an invitation, typically 80-95 points depending on the occupation and competition.

Tips to Maximise Your Score

For Chinese applicants, the most impactful strategies to boost your points are:

  • Improve English: Going from Proficient (IELTS 7) to Superior (IELTS 8) gives you 10 extra points. PTE Academic is often considered easier for Chinese speakers than IELTS.
  • NAATI certification: Get a community language (Mandarin) NAATI credential for 5 easy points. This is one of the most accessible ways for Chinese applicants to gain extra points.
  • State nomination: Consider applying for state nomination (190 for 5 points) or regional nomination (491 for 15 points). Tasmania, South Australia, and Northern Territory tend to have more accessible nomination criteria.
  • Professional Year: If you studied in Australia, completing a Professional Year program gives 5 points and valuable work experience.
  • Apply early: Age points decrease after 32, so timing your application is crucial.
