Understanding State Nomination
State nomination is where an Australian state or territory government sponsors your skilled migration application. The Subclass 190 (state nominated) gives permanent residency with 5 extra points. The Subclass 491 (regional sponsored) gives a provisional visa with 15 extra points and a pathway to the permanent 191 visa after 3 years living and working regionally.
Each state has its own occupation list, point requirements, and additional criteria. Choosing the right state can mean the difference between receiving an invitation within weeks or waiting years. States also change their requirements frequently, so always check the latest criteria.
State-by-State Overview
New South Wales (NSW): Most competitive. Focuses on high-skilled occupations in demand. Higher point thresholds (typically 85+ for 190). Separate streams for Sydney and regional NSW. Large Chinese community infrastructure but fierce competition.
Victoria (VIC): Good range of occupations. Generally requires 65+ points for 190. Strong focus on STEM and healthcare occupations. Melbourne has Australia's largest Chinese community. Requires evidence of commitment to living in Victoria.
Queensland (QLD): Growing program with good opportunities. Separate streams for Brisbane and regional QLD. Lower point thresholds than NSW/VIC. Strong demand for healthcare, engineering, and IT workers. Lifestyle appeal with warmer climate.
South Australia (SA): Most accessible state nomination. Wider occupation list including many trades and mid-skill occupations. Lower point requirements. Strong support for international graduates from SA universities. Adelaide offers affordable living with a growing Chinese community.
Western Australia (WA): Mining and resources-driven economy creates unique demand. Strong for engineering, trades, and healthcare. Perth offers excellent lifestyle with a growing Asian community. Graduate stream available for WA university graduates.
Tasmania (TAS): Most welcoming to applicants. Very broad occupation list. Specific streams for living in Tasmania, studying there, or having a job offer. Smallest Chinese community but rapidly growing. Very affordable living costs.
Strategy for Chinese Applicants
Don't fixate on Sydney or Melbourne if your points are borderline. Regional states offer more accessible pathways with significantly lower competition. Many Chinese families start in regional areas, obtain PR, and then move to major cities. The 491 regional visa requires you to live regionally for 3 years, but after that you are free to move anywhere. Consider this as a strategic stepping stone rather than a permanent commitment to regional living.
