Work Rights on Student Visa (500)
Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. This changed from the previous 40-hour limit in 2023. The 48-hour limit is based on fortnights, not individual weeks — so you could theoretically work 48 hours in one week and zero the next.
Finding Work
Popular jobs for Chinese students: tutoring (Mandarin or maths), hospitality (restaurants, cafes), retail, food delivery, warehouse work, and campus jobs. University career services can help with job searching and resume writing. Websites: Seek.com.au, Indeed, Jora, university job boards. Networking through Chinese student associations often leads to opportunities.
Tax and Super
Student visa holders pay tax like all other workers. Apply for a TFN immediately. You're entitled to the $18,200 tax-free threshold if you're a tax resident. Employers must pay you at least minimum wage ($23.23/hour) and 11.5% superannuation. When you leave Australia permanently, you can claim your super back through the DASP (Departing Australia Superannuation Payment) system — but it's taxed at 65%.
Know Your Rights
Your employer cannot pay you below minimum wage regardless of your visa status. Cash-in-hand below minimum wage is illegal. Your employer cannot threaten to report you to immigration. If you're being exploited, contact the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) — they will not share your details with immigration. Keep records of hours worked and payments received.
